Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club’s International Service Committee awarded $2,400 to the Las Cuevitas School.
41 students come to class each day ready to learn, grow, and build a brighter future. For many of these children, the school meal they receive each day is an important part of that experience. Approximately 41 meals are prepared at the school every day—but currently, there is no proper kitchen. Meals are prepared and stored under very basic and unsanitary conditions, creating an important need that our Rotary Club is committed to addressing.
Our project will provide Cuevitas School with a clean, safe, and appropriate kitchen for preparing and storing food. This may seem like a modest improvement, but the impact will be significant. A proper kitchen will create a healthier and more dignified environment for preparing daily meals, helping ensure that students can receive nutritious food in conditions that support their health and well-being.
The project also builds on work our Rotary Club has already completed at the school. Although the school has a municipal water connection, water service is available only twice a week. Recognizing this challenge, our Club previously helped construct a water collection and storage tank, ensuring that water is available throughout the week. That investment means the new kitchen will have the water needed for sinks, food preparation, and daily cleaning.
School meals are about much more than food. When children have access to a meal during the school day, they can have greater energy and concentration for learning, while families gain the reassurance that their children will receive at least one meal each school day. By creating a proper kitchen, we are helping support both the educational experience and the well-being of the students.
This kitchen represents the next step in our Rotary Club’s continuing commitment to Cuevitas School. It is a relatively small project with the potential for a lasting impact—not only for the 41 students attending today, but for the generations of children who will follow. Through projects like this, Rotary demonstrates how people working together can identify a need, invest in practical solutions, and create meaningful change in the lives of others.
A safe kitchen. A daily meal. A better environment for learning. A lasting investment in the children of Cuevitas School. This is Rotary in action.
